Please watch Doctored for FREE!

Story at-a-glance
The film Doctored reveals the hidden truth behind the chiropractic profession’s struggle against ignorance, and the systematic and deliberate campaign by the American Medical Association (A...
MA) to destroy complementary medicine

In 1984, the US Supreme Court found the AMA guilty of an illegal conspiracy to contain and eliminate the chiropractic profession, and ordered the AMA to cease its illegal boycott of chiropractors

Conventional medicine, backed and ruled by the pharmaceutical industry, is corrupt to the core and frequently does more harm than good, while simultaneously protecting their business and hiding its ineffectiveness by suppressing legitimate, safe, and effective alternative or complementary practices.

This movie shows just how much Chiropractors and Functional Medicine Practitioners have to offer our Sick Healthcare System.

Last weekend I finished my 5th national board exam and it is the very last one I will ever have to take; I am unbelievably stoked about that! (Assuming I passed…. They won’t have the results posted until the day after Christmas…) Anyway, this movie is exactly what I needed to see right now and it makes me very happy to be a Chiropractor and very happy to be a part of Be Well and the Functional Medicine Movement. Doctored is free to watch at the link below until the 17th of Nov. 2012 Please watch it and if you like it, please share it with someone.

Post-Halloween Candy Dilemmas by Dr. Wendy Edwards

A candy story about our son Gabe; reposted from the Be Well Lifestyle Blog

If your house is like any other typical American home, you woke up post-Halloween to piles of candy from last night’s trick-or-treating extravaganza. Your children are thrilled to have scored so much sweet loot, but you are probably feeling rather concerned about it all. You may find yourself wondering, “How can I hide it or limit it and how long will this much candy last?”

I wanted to share a tip that we implement in our home that may help ease some of the post-Halloween candy dilemmas…

First, when it comes to candy, there’s the okay, the bad and the down-right unacceptable. What I mean, is that some of the candy in those pumpkin buckets are far worse than others. At our house, we’ve trained our son (Gabe – age 6) to actually separate his candy into piles. He has an “I want to keep, because I really like it pile,” a “not as bad for you pile,” and a “must throw away because it makes my body sick pile.” Yes, at six years old, he initiates this all by himself. He actually began this routine a few years ago, believe it or not. Most children are not going to make these types of decisions, unless they have been trained this way from the beginning. However, the more you can teach your little ones about what’s good and healthy for them and what’s bad for them, the greater chance you and they have of developing this type of behavior and decision making.

For example, Gabe knows that eating foods like broccoli and carrots are good for him, just like he understands that his body loves it when he drinks lots of water and takes his Juice Plus+, Probiotics and Omega 3. We have taught him that those things will help him grow stronger, build muscle, help him be smarter and that his body LOVES them! On the flip-side, we’ve taught him that foods with too much sugar, artificial colorings, high fructose corn syrup and other health-destroying foods make his body sad, sick and he will have to work harder when it comes to school and learning and other things. Gabe really gets this concept and embraces it. He may not always love eating the healthy foods and it doesn’t mean that he doesn’t beg for ice cream, chocolate and want to eat some of his Halloween candy, but he understands at least that there are consequences (to health and his body) that he must pay to do so.

So here’s the deal, educate yourself first on which candy is just downright unacceptable to eat. Some of the worst offenders are candy corn, Dots, Now and Laters and Laffy Taffy. View the complete list of “Halloween Candy You Should Avoid” at http://www.takepart.com/photos/worst-halloween-candy?cmpid=foodinc-fb. Once you’re educated on what is absolutely toxic to your little ones, you can begin to educate your children. Explain to them why it’s bad for them and the consequences for eating toxic substances and chemicals. From there, encourage them to create their own piles. Sure they are going to LOVE some of the worst candies, so give a little and let them have a piece of their favorites. Once they’ve made their piles, encourage them to throw away the bad. This technique is a win-win for both parents and children. It not only teaches children about healthier habits, but is also really empowering for them.

It is Key that You Understand Methylation

New research below looking at how early life experience has a direct influence on the body's methylation process. DNA methylation is a crucial part of normal development and cellular differentiation. DNA methylation stablizes gene expression patterns in cells so that cells can "remember where they have been".

We can't change things that have happened to us but we can change the way our body deals with it. Proper Methylation is responsible for Neurotransmitter Balance, Efficient Detoxification and Efficient Cellular Energy Production; it is responsible for how your body experiences health and deals with inflammation. This is the reason I’m so dedicated to raising awareness about how diet and lifestyle have a direct affect on the methylation process. Most people approach Trich through trying to manage their thought patterns. Changing thought patterns to be more supportive of YOU will absolutely improve the way your body methylates but your thought patterns are the hardest thing to change. Medication affects the way you produce neurotransmitters but it does not support neurotransmitter balance and most will further complicate the body’s ability to methylate properly.

NAC, SAMe, Inositol… etc, all of these natural approaches influence the body’s methylation process and this is why they help in many cases. Regardless of how you decide to treat Trich, without complimenting treatment options with diet and lifestyle changes you will most likely not make significant improvements. This is why I’m so passionate about lifestyle change. Most of us feel like it would be impossible to change the way we think but we can start to improve the methylation process without changing thought patterns and when we take steps to improve methylation through lifestyle it makes changing thought patterns so much easier. I wish there was a magic bullet, I wish you could simply take the “blue pill” and not have to change anything but it is simply not the truth. Research methylation or DNA metylation and epigenetics; if you are asking the right questions, you will come to some startling conclusions.

(Medical Xpress)—Early life experience results in a broad change in the way our DNA is "epigenetically" chemically marked in the brain by a coat of small chemicals called methyl groups, according to researchers at McGill University. A group of researchers led by Prof. Moshe Szyf, a professor of Pharmacology and Therapeutics in the Faculty of Medicine, and research scientists at the Douglas Institute have discovered a remarkable similarity in the way the DNA in human brains and the DNA in animal brains respond to early life adversity. The finding suggests an evolutionary conserved mechanism of response to early life adversity affecting a large number of genes in the genome. Read more at: http://medicalxpress.com/news/2012-10-evidence-biological-embeds-social-dna.html#jCp

Watch Hungry for Change for free until Saturday, Oct. 6th 2012

"Hungry for Change" is free to watch until Saturday, Oct. 6th.  Watch this movie! It’s not about “a diet” it’s about gaining an understanding of normal human physiology and it’s broken down at a level that anyone can understand. You can use this information to dramatically improve your life.  http://www.hungryforchange.tv/book-free-screening

Movie Trailer:

The video below is Dr. Ben Goldacre at a recent TEDmed conference. The title of the talk is "What doctors don't know about the drugs they prescribe"; it really says it all. Most Medical Doctors do not know the truth about human health. When they say things like "diet or lifestyle doesn’t really matter with your condition" it’s because they don’t really know how it does. Did you know that Medical Doctors get absolutely no clinical nutrition in med school? If they want to learn about nutrition they have to do it on their own. This video shows that research is skewed toward profitability. If 5 studies show that a drug or food additive is safe and 5 studies show that it is harmful how does the peer review process decide what studies to publish? You would hope that since we’re talking about science they would do more research or choose in favor of what’s best for human health but in our current system profitability wins almost every time.

Six questions that can change your life!!

1.) Does NAC (N-AcetylCysteine) help us control Trich?

The answer is a resounding Yes! The article below talks about success with Trich specifically and there is much more research about NAC helping other Impulse Control Problems.

Recent research from the Department of Psychiatry, University of Minnesota School of Medicine regarding NAC and Glutathione click here: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/...
Conclusion: "This study, the first to our knowledge that examines the efficacy of a glutamatergic agent (production of glutathione) in the treatment of trichotillomania, found that N-acetylcysteine demonstrated statistically significant reductions in trichotillomania symptoms. No adverse events occurred in the N-acetylcysteine group, and N-acetylcysteine was well tolerated. Pharmacologic modulation of the glutamate system may prove to be useful in the control of a range of compulsive behaviors."  More Info here on how NAC works: http://kickthetrich.blogspot.com/2011/09/how-n-acetylcysteine-works.html NAC works best in combination with other Amino Acids, read how it works. If you go to http://www.pubmed.gov/ and type in N acetyl cysteine in the search box you will find other good articles.

NAC, SAMe, Inositol… etc, all of these natural approaches influence the body’s methylation process and this is why they help in many cases.

2.) Why would an Amino Acid Supplement that raises our antioxidant levels and improves Methylation (which is responsible for Neurotransmitter Balance, Efficient Detoxification and Efficient Cellular Energy Production more here) help us with Trich? Isn’t this problem STRESS related?

Effects of Chronic “Perceived Stress” on the Immune System include:
- Increased sympathetic (fight or flight) activity decreases cellular immunity
- Immune cells migrate to different parts of the body and can worsen autoimmune and allergic conditions
-Over time, the positive acute mobilization of immune cells in response to challenge is suppressed.

Related research: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11499335

3.) Does it make sense that you could increase the effectiveness of NAC or even mimic its effects with diet and exercise changes?

Another resounding YES!! More here: http://kickthetrich.blogspot.com/20...

You can enhance the effectiveness of NAC with lifestyle changes. Conversely, you may interfere with the effectiveness of NAC by making lifestyle choices that are counterproductive.
4.) Does a poor diet and poor lifestyle choices play as large a role in the activation of Trich symptoms as our perceived stress level?

Poor Diet and Lack of Exercise will affect your cellular environment in exactly the same way as chronic stress and in other ways that also decrease your body’s ability to adapt to your environment. Watch Food Matters!! You can watch here for FREE until 10/08/2011 http://articles.mercola.com/sites/a...

5.) Why haven’t I heard any of this from my Dr?

Because most Doctors have studied abnormal physiology (aka Pathology) all of their professional life and they do not understand normal human physiology at the level needed to help you. He/She was not adequately educated in nutrition at school and they get most of their information from drug companies. Drug companies are not interested in teaching anyone about the importance of lifestyle changes and how they can affect various conditions. They also have no interest in recommending a $14 nutritional supplement (NAC), that you can get from any health food store, even though it has PROVEN to be EFFECTIVE through research. Understand how NAC works http://kickthetrich.blogspot.com/2011/09/how-n-acetylcysteine-works.html and watch the movie above!!

6.) Are you truly serious about stopping Trichotillomania?

If the answer is yes, Take Action! http://kickthetrich.blogspot.com/20... Because of what I’ve learned through the study of normal human physiology, I no longer concern myself with redirecting my behavior. After 24 years, I’ve taken action to stop the urge to pull and eat my hair in the first place. I am 100% convinced that you too can make lifestyle changes and find significant relief.

I’m launching a web based version of my support group. It will be a FREE webinar style forum with open communication between members. Current Support Group info here: http://kickthetrich.blogspot.com/20...

FAQ's and More Info

Why is Trich (and other Impulse Control Problems) so Enjoyable?

It’s enjoyable because, (for whatever reason), our brains have hooked the release of “feel good” neurotransmitters to the action of both pulling the hair and performing the post pull sensory activity… (All impulse control issues stem from the same type of neurotransmitter imbalance, I'm not sure why our physiology chooses different forms of expression.) We have basically adapted a way to mentally “Check Out” of our environment, but the result of this adaptation is devastating to the lives of almost all who suffer. Where Trauma is involved, therapy and CBT can really help us find the event or chain of events that we are escaping. (Maybe you already know or maybe it doesn’t feel like Trauma at all from your current perspective.) Maybe Your Cause is not trauma related at all; Maybe your body is trying to escape a Physiological State of Being (ie: state of health) or maybe you are trying to escape a combination of both “micro traumas” and the physiological state you’ve set for yourself over time. Find YOUR reason (or reasons) your mind/body has a need for this escape and you will be able to address it and overcome it. Physical Trauma, Emotional Trauma, Cellular Toxicity and/or Deficiency; all of these reduce immune system function; they suppress mitochondrial activity which depresses the cell’s ability to produce energy efficiently. All of these stressors hinder our ability to adapt to our environment. Some of us will experience relief with therapy alone but most of us need a much deeper evaluation. CBT and Therapy alone does not hold an answer for all those who suffer and medication on its best day functions as a band-aid and at worst screws up everything…
If I were to start all over again, I would ask my doctor to look into metabolic
testing, something like this http://www.bewellnsb.com/DHFMetabolicProfile.pdf
and if I were female I might have the need to ask the doctor to follow up with an expanded female hormone panel, something like this http://www.bewellnsb.com/diagnostechfemalehormonepanel.pdf
It's all connected; we have to stop treating the parts and start addressing the whole. ;-)

If you have tried NAC before and did not experience relief, the most common reasons for this are the following: (You should minimize this problem by using NAC or equivalent protocol under the supervision of a professional.) 1.) Remember that NAC is most effective when combined with other Amino Acids and Nutrients. (We use a modified version of this protocol at Be Well: https://www.bewellnsb.com/DFH28DayDetox.pdf  2.) Remember that it can take up to one month of consistent use for you to notice relief. (Could take up to two months if you are working against yourself.)  3.) Effective dose is usually between 500 – 1500 mg three times per day (in divided doses). Read this Page! http://kickthetrich.blogspot.com/2011/09/how-n-acetylcysteine-works.html
More info here http://www.alternativementalhealth.com/articles/walshMP.htm#Met on Methylation/Production of Glutathione.
All body systems work together. It’s absolutely ridiculous to treat one aspect of one body system and expect to “fix” anything…  Listen to Dr. Donielle Wilson, ND. “Seven Essential Indicators for Optimal Women's Wellness: Digestion, Sleep, Energy, Mood, Cycle, Diet, Stress” Healing cannot take place until you start asking the right questions.

More Research:
Inositol works by supporting all neurotransmitter activity in the brain. Effective dose of Inositol by itself has shown to be between 3 and 6 grams three times per day, (9 grams - 18 grams total in divided doses), which is a lot of inositol... Keep in mind when reading research that the point of research is to isolate the nutrient in question to see if it really has an effect on a particular condition. Unfortunately, this can result in extremely high doses; this is shown to be true in looking at both NAC and Inositol. In clinical settings, clinicians know that Nutrient Synergy is very important. When you combine nutrients like NAC and Inositol with other synergistic nutrients you can use less of any one particular substance.
